Par(ty)mageddon – How to Survive a Family Get-together.

We all love our family (some of them?) and one of the joys (obligations) of family is coming together for special occasions, or any reason to stuff our faces and catch up.

Here’s 5 tips on how to make it through with minimal physical / psychological damage:

1). The Grudge – Lift that curse

Holding on to resentment can cause depression and stress. Make a conscious decision to let that long-standing grudge with a family member go.

2). High Noon – No public show downs

We all have that well-meaning (interfering) relative who always warns us of the dangers of sugar as we approach the dessert table. Take them aside somewhere private and sensitively explain that their comments can sometimes be hurtful.

3). Gladiator – Spartic (you and) us the trauma of a fight

If there are family members who absolutely cannot be in the same room without resorting to fisticuffs, have separate get togethers to ensure that your home is not turned into the Colosseum.

4). The Hangover – Alcohol is a recipe for disaster

Alcohol can reduce our ability to think clearly and may turn off those inhibitors that would usually stop us from speaking our minds with devastating honesty. Swap cocktails for mocktails.

5). Eat, Pray, Love – Find yourself having a great time

Delicious food and a positive attitude will work wonders for a great family get together. Remind yourself how lucky you are to have a family to celebrate special occasions with. And pray that it all goes smoothly.
